For more than a decade, the Quail Springs church has been involved in supporting Predisan, a medical mission located in and around Catacamas, in the Olancho region of Honduras. The name "Predisan" tells the story of this wonderful and productive ministry. The Spanish name translates "to preach and to heal", in accordance with Luke 9:2. "And He sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick".
Mission Predisan’s future is bright after experiencing an extremely difficult year in 2009. Thanks to Quail Springs’ wonderful support, Predisan made it through fiscal year 2009 in the black and continued serving those in great need in Honduras. Quail has been a wonderful part of Predisan’s ministry for more than 20 years, and many Quail people have been to Predisan.
And after months of cancelled group trips, peace has returned to Honduras and the travel alert has been lifted. Seventeen groups of volunteers are already scheduled for this year, including Quail’s group in March led by Amy Nickerson.
A great blessing of 2010 is the return of Dr. Amanda Madrid, M.D., Ph.D., to serve once again as medical director. Another blessing came Feb. 7 when 152 elementary and secondary students began the school year on Predisan scholarships.
Once again, our greatest challenge for 2010 is funding, as we finished calendar year 2009 significantly down in donations compared to the previous year. The staff still has a 20 percent reduction in salaries and program costs initiated last year, but we hope those cuts can be restored at some point.
For those new to Predisan: Mission Predisan, founded in 1986, provides the people of Eastern Honduras with life-changing, holistic care for the body, mind and spirit. Its name comes from two Spanish words meaning “to preach” and “to heal,” as in Luke 9:2: “… He sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.”
Predisan provides more than 42,000 patient services each year at nine clinics: the Good Samaritan Health Center — a large family clinic with surgical suites, CEREPA addiction treatment center, and seven mountain and barrio clinics. Martha Rivera, executive director, leads a staff of more than 70 Hondurans and one North American missionary, Kyle Huhtanen.
